Training
Runaway Farms offers complete training services for the horse on an individual basis. Our farm manager and resident trainer, Melissa Roberts, has been training horses since 1996 and has worked with many different breeds and horses of all experience levels. Although she specializes in starting young horses and ponies for any discipline, groundwork, and lower level dressage training, Melissa is also experienced in retraining and working with "problem horses". Her training method blends natural horsemanship and common sense with centered riding and classical dressage techniques in order to form a willing partnership that can benefit any horse in any discipline, not just dressage.
Sympathetic but firm and consistent handling, not abuse, creates willing and well-trained equine partners. Horses are disciplined in an appropriate manner when necessary, but are also rewarded generously for any steps in the right direction. We spend a lot of time on the basics, ensuring that each horse understands and enjoys his work. A horse with solid basics and a good work ethic is a pleasure to own, ride, and be around!
Training programs are offered for horses at every age and stage of training, from foals up through experienced riding horse. Our specialty is starting horses under saddle, but we take pride in bringing out the best in any horse, whether it is an unstarted 3 year old, a foal who needs the learn the rules of interacting with people, or a riding horse with problems or plateaus to work through. We are in the business of helping horses and their owners; therefore we are always happy to refer clients to other trainers if we are unable to achieve the desired results with a horse, or when a horse is ready to progress beyond what we can teach.
We encourage prospective clients to come out and visit us...watch a horse being worked, see our facilities, and ask us all the questions you can think of. We know that if people come and see what we do here, they will be impressed.
